The Evergreen Hero!
Legend has it that when Dev Anand dressed in all-black with a red scarf flung around his neck, the ladies and girls stopped in their tracks to have an eyeful of the heartthrob loping by. There was no mistaking that jaunty demeanour, with arms loosely dangling and neck cocked slightly to one side.
The flair and flamboyance of Dev Anand didn’t wane with age. He is perhaps the only Hindi film hero to romance a 20-year-old newbie (Tina Munim) on screen when he was 55. Even in his final years, he exuded the energy of a teen and beneath that sagging jowl and facial lines, there still beamed the smile of an adolescent.
Dev Anand was truly deserving of the epithet “Evergreen Hero”. His Romance with Life ended on Saturday, December 3, in London when he left his body after suffering a heart attack at the age of 88. Out of these 88 years, 65 were devoted to cinema, to making films that resonate with masses and classes alike, to giving performances that still inspire actors, and to discovering talents that has shaped Hindi cinema over the years.
Here’s a tribute to the man who continued his love affair with cinema to his last years.
