Despite the barbs Tom Cruise faced for being “unfit” to play the tough and hardy character Jack Reacher, the superstar does look convincing imparting vigilante justice on the streets of an American city.
“There's this guy, he's a kind of cop - at least he used to be. He doesn't care about proof, he doesn't care about the law, he only cares about what's right...He knows what I did. You can't protect me. No one can.”
These words of a beaten up, bandaged guy on a hospital bed open the trailer of Jack Reacher, written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The man’s talking about the eponymous hero, Jack Reacher, a former cop, who acts beyond the law to keep the crime in the city in check.
“You think I'm a hero? I'm not a hero. And if you're smart, that will scare you,” says the titular protagonist as he speeds through the streets at night.
Jack Reacher is an adaptation of the 2005 novel One Shot by Lee Child. The film also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo, Michael Raymond-James, James Martin Kelly and Nicole Forester.
Since the book’s hero is a man of strong built, highly developed military and investigative skills, savant intelligence and anti-hero personality, Tom Cruise’s choice for the role was criticised by the fans of Lee Child’s book.
But after watching the trailer, you can’t help but admire Tom Cruise’s pluck to take up the role of a guy who takes on a bunch of baddies alone.
Jack Reacher releases on December 31.
