Emraan romancing the Daayans
Directed by Kannan Iyer, the movie Ek Thi Daayan is first of its kind on the witches being made on a grand scale in Bollywood. Ek Thi Daayan looks every bit promising as it touches on the mysterious subject of Daayan cult, a predominant part of folklores in India. Produced by Ekta Kapoor and Vishal Bhardwaj, the film is also high on entertainment value.

Ekta Kapoor says, “Indians love folklore, but there has been no recent film on the subject. Surreal, intriguing and enigmatic folklore enjoys a strong mass connect. If America’s obsession with vampires can give rise to a series of vampire flicks, why not a first-of-its-kind daayan (witch) film in India. Dark, diabolical women fascinate us…” Indeed the makers have come up with an interesting film that toplines actors like Emraan Hashmi, Kalki Koechlin, Konkona Sen Sharma and Huma Qureshi. The first trailer of the film also received an overwhelming response.

The story of the film revolves around Bobo (Emraan Hashmi), who is India’s top magician, a star. But unknown to even his beautiful girlfriend Tamara (Huma Qureshi), his life is falling apart. Hallucinations about his dead kid sister Misha are casting a dark shadow on his life, threatening his very sanity. He is left with no option but to seek psychiatric help in the form of the rather odd Dr. Palit who puts him under regression hypnosis to go back to the distant past.

A terrifying childhood story surfaces in which a dark supernatural power, in the form of a daayan destroys Bobo’s family, his father and baby sister, leaving him orphaned and alone. Worse, the daayan promises to return to haunt him forever.

Dr. Palit dismisses Bobo’s visions as just fantasy and convinces Bobo to do the same. Bobo’s life returns to normalcy; he attains great heights as a magician; he marries Tamara and adopts the ten-year-old Zubin. They are a happy family till the irresistible Lisa Dutt (Kalki Koechlin) enters their life. Bobo’s entire subconscious screams, “the daayan is back”. The great magician finds himself pitted against the supernatural. Is Lisa the daayan?

The answers will be revealed once the movie hits theatres on April 13. Meanwhile, catch some new stills of the movie along with some details of the cast and characters.
