Sushant as Byomkesh Bakshi
Sushant Singh Rajput’s film career is going great guns, thanks to the roles coming his way. The TV’s heartthrob made a promising Bollywood debut in Kai Po Che!, and has now been signed by the director Dibakar Banerjee as the detective Byomkesh Bakshi for his upcoming period thriller.
The film is said to be based on one of the 33 crime thrillers penned between 1932 and 1970 by the famed Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandopadhyay with Byomkesh Bakshi as the protagonist. However, the audiences know about the detective Byomkesh Bakshi because of the popular TV serial aired on Doordarshan in the year 1993. The critically-acclaimed serial was directed by Basu Chatterjee.
Though there are Bengali films on Byomkesh Bakshi, this is for the first time that a Hindi film is made on the iconic detective of Bengali literature. Dibakar Banerjee had earlier stated that the film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy will trace the journey of a young Byomkesh Bakshi, who had high aspirations and passion of becoming a detective. The movie is set in 1942 war-torn Calcutta.
So, why Sushant Singh Rajput to reprise the character of Byomkesh Bakshi? “He is very natural, subtle and credit goes to him for efficiently portraying Manav (in ‘Pavitra Rishta’). The second reason is he is modern and I wanted a young, vulnerable actor,” says Dibakar, who was in Kolkata with the actor, scouting for locations and promoting the film.
Sushant Singh Rajput as Byomkesh Bakshi, clad in simple cotton kurta and churidaar, even met the media people in Kolkata. The movie Detective Byomkesh Bakshy will go on the floors soon. Do you like Sushant as the new Byomkesh Bakshi?
