The Railway Man
Starring Academy Award winners Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth, The Railway Man has got its debut trailer and though we are not crystal ball gazers, the film might just be a contender for the Oscars.
The video opens with Eric Lomax (Colin Firth) and Patricia Wallace’s (Nicole Kidman) chance meeting in a train, and how they gradually fall in love and get married thereafter.
Patricia Wallace says, ‘He (Eric Lomax) is a wonderful man; I have seen it. But he is a mess.” The focus from the love story then shifts to Lomax’s traumatizing past and the World War II.
After being captured by the Japanese, Lomax and thousands of other prisoners are forced to work for the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during the WW2. However, as fate would have it, Nagase (Hiroyuki Sanada), the man who tormented and traumatized Lomax the most, the major reason behind Lomax’s messy past, is still alive and works for a museum now.
No wonder Eric Lomax decides to confront him, with the intention of attaining a closure. The most interesting fact about ‘The Railway Man’ is that it is based on the namesake autobiography by Eric Lomax. Well, truth really is stranger than fiction.
