The year 2013 saw box office records smashed left right and centre. Besides the mega blockbusters, the year had its share of surprise hits on which few had bet, but which did unexpectedly well at the BO in spite of no big stars to pull in the crowds. ApunKaChoice takes a look at these sleeper hits.
Our list also features Akshay Kumar’s Special 26. Made on a low budget, the movie had star power but was shorn of glamour or item songs. All it had to offer was a gritty tale of heist dramas and intrigue set in the 80s. Though not a money-spinner, the film did fairly well in theatres.
Next followed Kai Po Che! and Aashiqui 2. Both the films were clear hits in the first quarter of the year. Among the two, Aashiqui 2 went on to become a blockbuster and even enter the 100 crore club. Reason: the fresh pairing of Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur and its infectious and soothing music.
The second half of the year saw biggest hits like Grand Masti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. If one was crude and vulgar, the other was an inspiring story of an athlete. Both the films were much-loved by the audiences, who weighed content over stars.
