Filmmaker Prakash Jha comes up with yet another movie that raises a socially relevant issue - that of kidnappings. While kidnapping is supposed to be an incident of crime for ransom, in certain Indian states it has become a proper, well-organized industry. This is what Jha's movie Apaharan explores and exposes.
Apaharan marks the teaming up of Prakash Jha and Ajay Devgan once again after Gangajal . Apart from Ajay, the movie stars Bipasha Basu , Nana Patekar , Mohan Agashe, Yashpal Sharma and Mukesh Tiwari.
The movie has Devgan playing Ajay Shastri, a man burdened by the expectations of his highly principled and self-righteous social activist father (Mohan Agashe).
Ajay aspires for a job in the police force, which is his ticket to a future of power, respectability and social status.
Bipasha Basu plays Megha, a girl who loves Ajay and wants to be his moral support in the times of crisis.
Megha thinks she understands Ajay. But their ways are perhaps destined to go separate.
Nana Patekar plays Tabrez, a minority political leader. He is an influential figure who literally runs a parallel government that has undercover links with the criminal world.
Ajay's life is turned topsy-turvy after certain unfortunate incidents. He is forced to take the road that goes deep into the belly of crime and underworld. It is a road that takes Ajay far far away from what his father had envisaged for him.
Apaharan aims to expose the vile culture of kidnappings that has dogged the Northern Indian state of Bihar. The film asks some bitter and hard-hitting questions relating to the very social fabric of what is deemed as a civilized society.
The film tells the story from the perspective of an ordinary man who is sucked into the whirlpool of crime because he is not strong enough to fight the influential people who have evil intentions and who exercise their power with an iron fist.
Apaharan is produced and directed by Prakash Jha. The movie has special appearance by Cleo Isaacs. She plays a bar dancer with a soft corner for Ajay.
Apaharan is slated to hit the theatres on December 2.
