'Bewafaa' Bewafaa stays faithful to kitsch

Kehte hai pehla pyaar bhulaya nahi jaata. Magar aaj ke zamane main yeh saari baatein outdated ho chuki hai wisecracks Akshay at the end of this movie. The line, no matter how clichéd, actually sums up the entire theme of this grossly boring and kitschy tear-jerker from Dharmesh Darshan, one of those directors who have never risen above mediocrity.

Even if we excuse the soppy dialogues, the story is so very predictable and the characterizations so blatantly poor, that you yawn through a good part of the movie, and see your neighbor do the same.

In

between, whenever you look at the screen you see a number of irritating characters – a caricature of Manoj Bajpai, an uptight Anil Kapoor, the maiden in distress Kareena Kapoor and her superficial-sounding parents Kabir Bedi and Nafisa Ali. Only Akshay Kumar provides a little respite in this barrage of idiocy that Mr Darshan so flamboyantly unleashes upon his viewers.

And now, the story:

If you remember Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Silsila, you will instantly gauge the originality and innovation of Bewafaa’s storywriters.

Kareena Kapoor plays Anjali, the young daughter of an Indian father (Kabir Bedi) and a Canadian mother (an incredibly superfluous Nafisa Ali) living in Montreal. Anjali is having a secret affair with a guy who goes by the kitschy name Indian Raja (Akshay Kumar). Raja is a struggling musician.

Anjali’s elder sister Aarti (Sushmita Sen) comes to Montreal to give birth to her first child. She meets Anjali’s boyfriend, approves of him, and gives her elderly advice that the two lovebirds should talk about their affair with ma and pa at the right time. But that right time never comes as Aarti dies while delivering the twins and circumstances force Anjali to marry Aarti’s husband Aditya who is a business tycoon back home in New Delhi.

Despite the sudden twist in her fate, Anjali tries to settle into her new life with the two kids and her somber husband. But Aditya is too busy either in his work or bereaving and reminiscing about his dead wife. After all pehla pyar bhulaya nahin jata.

It takes an accident to shake Aditya out of his slumber and he vows to be a good husband. But by that time Indian Raja comes to India to cut a musical concert with his troupe. And Anjali – having not forgotten her pehla pyar – falls to the temptation of having an extra-marital affair. But as Ishq and Mushk (love and fragrance) cannot be hidden, so Anjali’s secret amour is discovered by Aditya’s cunning friend Dil (Manoj Bajpai) and his chirpy wife (Shamitaa Shetty).

As the story draws to a close, Anjali finds herself at the crossroad where she has to choose one – her husband or her lover.

And the denouement to the story is so lackluster and so void of the impact for which it was designed, that you somehow make your way out of the auditorium, suppressing your yawn, and seeing others do the same.
