'Dil Hai Tumhara' has evergreen Rekha playing Saritji, a widowed mother of two feisty young girls Shilu (Preity Zinta) and Nimmu (Mahima Chaudhary). Shilu is Saritji's stepdaughter and therefore always feels a little neglected than Nimmu, Saritji's real daughter.
Although a tomboyish teenybopper on the surface Shilu is deep inside very strongly attached to her stepmother. But Saritji does not reciprocate Shilu's emotions with equal intensity.
Shilu finds friendship and affection in Samir (Jimmy Shergill), a smalltime ventriloquist who seems to understand her better than anyone else does.
The two sister's lives are turned topsy-turvy with the entry of a rich and handsome businessman Dev (Arjun Rampal). Both Shilu and Nimmu are drawn towards him. While Nimmu is sure about her sentiments for Dev, Shilu feels torn between the two men in her life.
That is when an unexpected event takes place and puts Shilu close to the person she loves the most - her mother!
