Hawas, directed by Karan Razdan, is an ineffective attempt to go beyond the Bollywood stereotype with the bold theme of a sexually unsatisfied wife seeking gratification in an extramarital affair.
But a mere incorporation of a hitherto untried storyline is not enough. What matters is the way in which it is presented, and the conviction with which the characters are portrayed. Sadly, Hawas doesn’t go anywhere beyond the flaunting of cleavage and navel by new belle Meghna Naidu and some brawny session by Tarun Arora.
The movie’s story itself provides an ample scope for exploration of several sub plots but the director hasn’t capitalized on any of these. For instance, the inner dilemma of a wife –to throw away all the sacred vows of a marriage and indulge in an act of infidelity just for physical reasons – is not explored sufficiently.
Then the acting by all the three newcomers – Meghna Naidu, Shawar Ali and Tarun Arora – is simply bland and void of intensity.
Meghna’s character contained a tremendous acting potential but the shapely damsel doesn’t go any far than giving a few erotic expressions and, of course, the expression of sexual depravity.
In a nutshell, Hawas is a good watch for those interested in seeing a lot of skin but little substance.
