The Karz Movie Review

Written by Anees Bazmee and directed by Harry Baweja, Karz is based on the oft-repeated storyline of an abandoned son in search of his mother.

The film is riddled with clich�s and other similar stereotypes that form the backbone of Bollywood kitsch. But for a handful of sequences, the film hardly captures the viewer's interest.

For instance, Johny Lever's comic track in the first half of the movie is irritating and ineffective. Similarly, the development of Sunny's character as a cynical alcoholic in the early stages evokes pity and contempt.

Shilpa Shetty's entry is refreshing but her character needs much sprucing. Sunil Shetty lives upto his image and delivers another mediocre performance completely void of any emotive appeal. His face expressions are bland and his dialogue delivery lacks right intonations.

The only interesting sequence in the film is in the latter half when Sunny confronts his mother. Kiron Kher's dominating screen presence seems to have pruned even Sunny's acting by several notches. Otherwise, the brawny Punjabi Puttar hardly manages to get out of his customary hollering mould.

On the whole Karz is an average flick that might appeal only to those who dig Sunny's machismo and Shilpa's gyrations.
