The 15-minute short film, 'Little Terrorist' is written, directed and co-produced by Ashwin Kumar, son of Indian fashion designer Ritu Kumar.
Based on a real life episode, the film chronicles the tale of a 10-year-old Pakistani boy, Jamal, who mistakenly crosses into the Indian border while chasing his cricket ball. He finds an unusual ally in a Hindu Brahmin, Bhola, a school-teacher by profession.
But little Jamal is branded as a terrorist by the security forces who descend on Bhola's village searching for the “terrorist”.
The character Jamal aka 'Little Terrorist' is played by Salim, a street child from the 'Salaam Balak' Trust, which was established by film maker Mira Nair after the success of her film 'Salaam Bombay'.
The role of the compassionate school teacher Bhola is played by Sushil Sharma, a clerk in the Delhi electrical supply company, who has been part of the Delhi theatre scene.
Meghna Mehtaa, a student of Vasant Valley School, New Delhi, has also played an important part in the film.
Costumes for the movie are done by Ritu Kumar, Ashwin's mother.
'Little Terrorist' was made at a skimpy budget of 15,000 pounds. It was shot in five-and-half-days in December 2003 in a remote village of Rajasthan.
The film was screened at the IFFI in Goa last year. It has already won the Grand Prize at the Tehran International Short Film Festival, Best Film at the Flanders International Film Festival, first prize at the Montreal World Film Festival and Audience Favorite prizewinner at the Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival.
'Little Terrorist' has now been nominated for the Oscars in best short film category.
