The main meri patni aur woh Movie Review

Worth a Watch

RATING: 1

For those sated of seeing big stars playing larger than life characters in movies with fictitiously overblown stories, Main Meri Patni Aur Woh is a whiff of fresh air.

Directed by Chandan Arora, the movie is almost a slice of real life - a simple and interesting story revolving around characters that are ordinarily unique and easy to identify with.

Main Meri Patni Aur Woh tells the tale of a short-heighted, ordinary looking man who is married to a tall, good-looking girl. The movie brings forth the husband's insecurities and inferiority complex because deep inside he feels that he is no match for his beautiful and charming wife.

Actor Rajpal Yadav plays Mithilesh, a librarian at the Lucknow University. Pressured by his parents, Mithilesh goes to see a girl for marriage in Bareily. The girl, Veena (Rituparna Sengupta), turns out to be a gorgeous damsel with a smile that warms the very cockles of our ordinary looking hero.

At first, Mithilesh reckons his chances to be nil. But, surprisingly, the girl consents to marriage. The two get married and Mithilesh is the happiest man in the world. But...

Soon Mithilesh begins to encounter his own inferiorities. He feels sidelined in front of his tall and beautiful wife. Whenever someone compliments Veena, Mithilesh is reminded of his own nondescript looks and personality. Veena's interaction with any male makes him jealous.

A desperate Mithilesh turns to lord Shiva for help. He also tries to instill confidence inside him and tries to outsmart people just to assure himself of some self-worth.

But this superficial confidence busts with the coming of Akash (Kay Kay Menon), a suave, handsome man who turns out to be the childhood friend of Veena. Akash has a dynamic personality. He smokes with swagger, drinks with style and plays guitar with ease. Akash is everything that Mithilesh longs to be.

While Veena and Akash groove in like best of friends, Mithilesh feels out of place.

Mithilesh tries to improve himself. He begins to work out, starts reading books, begins to imitate Akash and even visits a quack to get taller. But all this comes to no use. It is then Mithilesh takes a decision. This decision changes the course of the story.

Main Meri Patni Aur Woh is sprinkled with humour and bitter realities of life. The male protagonist and his insecurities are easily identifiable.

Rajpal Yadav literally slips under the skin of his character, Mithilesh. The talented, ordinary-looking actor does a brilliant job playing a nondescript. The lack of confidence and low self-worth that Rajpal brings in his character makes the movie work. His facial reactions, his coy smile and his body language - all lend credibility to Mithilesh. His outburst at the movie's end is quite stirring.

Rituparna Sengupta looks gorgeous and plays her part with conviction. She is already a star in Bengali cinema, but she underplays herself in this movie.

Kay Kay Menon lives up to his reputation of a skilled actor. He deftly brings a slightly overt flamboyance and panache to his character.

On the sidelines, Varun Bodola (as Mithilesh's friend Salim) and Vinod Nagpal (as uncle) are adequate.

Director Chandan Arora must be complimented for trying a refreshingly different story on screen. His previous movie Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon was a dud at the box-office, but was based on a daringly different subject. Main Meri Patni Aur Woh too walks a less-trodden line. But the movie is not without its shortcomings.

The songs fail to punctuate the movie well enough. The movie begins on a gripping note and involves a viewer in the first half. But the second half gets a bit too slow and predictable.

However, the movie's climax, or better, the stirring conclusion, absolves it of its faults.

Worth a watch.
