The mere jeevan saathi Movie Review

A Drag

RATING: 1

For those who have embraced the emerging new face of Bollywood, watching Suneel Darshan's 'Mere Jeevan Saathi' would be a test of patience.

Not only is the movie based on an utterly predictable and hackneyed story, the treatment of its leading characters and the mandatory placement of songs at regular intervals make this movie a drag.

The writer of this movie seems to have been stuck in time warp. The story of 'Mere Jeevan Saathi' is a trampled-to-death love triangle about an over-possessive woman, a helpless man and his loyal girlfriend. The movie features Akshay Kumar , Karisma Kapoor and Amisha Patel in the leading roles.

Akshay plays Vicky, an aspiring pop singer. He is in love with Anjali (Amisha). Amisha's character is that of a dedicated lover with hardly any other ambition in life than to love her man unconditionally.

Vicky gets a break when M.T. Music Company, owned by Molani (Gulshan Grover) and Tolani (Ashish Vidyarthi), signs him for musical shows. In the meantime, Vicky gets a meatier offer from a US-based music company. Vicky dumps Molani, Tolani for the American company Angel Music, and in doing so only makes them his enemies.

The two music barons swear revenge. But it is Anjali who is injured before Vicky flies to the US. Anjali won't let her injury prevent Vicky from realizing his dream. So, half-heartedly, Vicky heads for New York.

Natasha (Karisma Kapoor) is the CEO of Angel Music in New York. It turns out that she has harboured a crush on Vicky ever since their college days. In fact, it also turns out that Natasha has floated the company in order to let Vicky get his lucky break into the world of music and win his love in return.

As Natasha goes about helping Vicky with his musical shows, she also tries to make in-roads to his heart. In a moment of weakness, Vicky gives in to Natasha's charms and the two end up making love.

Having put the noose in his own neck, Vicky now feels the prick of conscience about having betrayed his ladylove Anjali. He wants to be back with her but Natasha won't let him be. Natasha begins intruding into Vicky's life. She is neurotically obsessed about winning his love and ousting Anjali from his life. For this, she could kill or die.

'Mere Jeevan Saathi' is a movie that is years behind the present times. Even if we discount the movie's clichéd plot, the soppy sentimentality, the over-blown emotional expressions get on one's nerves. Adding to the viewer ordeal is the number of songs that squeeze in at the slightest opportune moment. And the second half of the movie makes you reconsider your notion of patience.

Akshay Kumar offers nothing different from what he already has in stories of the same ilk ( Aitraaz , for instance).
Also the pop star act doesn't suit him entirely.

Karisma Kapoor shows some good acting as the neurotic Natasha. But her character is shown too aggressive and vacillating between self-sacrifice and obsession.

Amisha Patel plays her part well but her character is poorly etched.

It appears that the movie's director Suneel Darshan simply refuses to grow with the times. Presently, when filmmakers are walking onto less-trodden paths and experimenting with new story ideas, Darshan toes the beaten line. The result is an outdated film like 'Mere Jeevan Saathi'.

A drag to watch.
