Tapish is a story about a girl 'Lajwati' aka 'Laji' of 20 years of age. She is not very ambitious but just wants to draw quite a good caricature of her life by her own - she is doing her MBA in Mumbai.
This very cultured, traditional and subdued girl Laji is from a middle class city of Bikaner, Rajasthan. She stays in Mumbai with a top model Namrata in her lavish flat. They share a good rapport between them since last two years of staying together despite Namrata's ultra modern life. Namrata has a live-in relationship with another top model Vicky.
As per traditional norms, Laji is young enough to get married. She gets married in between her studies without much objection with a bright young man Deodhar of Jodhpur.
But unfortunately, the groom, the only son of his parents, dies on the Suhaag Raat itself. Consequently, for the young widow, every pulse of her life changes as her in-laws put the blame of this accident on her. They start hating and misbehaving with her.
Laji tries her best to tolerate all consequences as she feels everything will be alright. But all hell breaks loose when her brother-in-law starts seducing her. She gets into a rebellious mood.
Laji leaves her in-laws' house and goes back to her parents. She finds their behavior changed towards her and luckily, to save her, her friend Nammo comes and takes her away to Mumbai.
Life takes a turn. Laji gets a good job and also a good boy Rahul. He is a street play actor who comes from a business family. On the other hand, Nammo gets married to Vicky and takes both Rahul and Laji for her honeymoon. Here Rahul proposes Laji for marriage and she reveals her past to him. He asks time for thinking.
Nammo bombards Rahul in a furious mood and this seems to do the trick. Rahul realizes his mistake and accepts Laji. But Laji has already decided not to get married with a man who cannot face and accept reality.
A film that explores relationships as more and more people live lives in the fast lane and leave values behind.
