'Rama Shama Bhama' Fun Flick

Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan is second to none when it comes to enacting comedy. Tamil cinema is studded with flicks that proclaim Kamal's flair for comedy. To name a few: ‘Avvai Shanmughi’, ‘Tenali’, ‘Michael’, ‘Madan Kamarajan’ and ‘Panchathanthiram’.

‘Rama Shama Bhama’ marks Kamal's triumphant return to the Kannada cinema after more than 16 years. The film is a Kannada remake of the Tamil original, Sathi Leelavathi featuring Kamal Haasan. That movie directed by Balu Mahendra, came out 15 years ago.

Well, to put it frankly, the Kannada version matches the Tamil original from the qualitative standpoint. Interestingly, Kamal and Ramesh Aravind who co-starred in ‘Sathi Leelavathi’, again share screen space in ‘Rama Shama Bhama’. And with telling effect.

The resultant product is a fabulous fun flick that has struck an enthusiastically responsive chord among Kannada movie buffs. Ramesh has directed the film, too.

From the performance point, actress Urvashi gives stiff competition to both Kamal and Arvind with her superb sense of comedy and flawless timing.

Cartoonist Rama (Ramesh) is a much married man. The placid waters of his life get rudely rippled when Rama runs into Priya (Daisy Bopanna). In no time, friendship matures into mutual attraction. The outcome is a torrid affair. Rama's wife Bhama (Urvashi), and two children are blissfully unaware of Rama's fling with Priya.

Rama compounds his offence by telling Priya that he is a bachelor. But then, the cat is out of the bag when he comes across friend Dr Shyam (Kamal Haasan) and his wife Shanthi (Shruthi).

In the resultant upheaval, Bhama walks out on Rama. The man, however, stays with Priya.

Then begins the streak of comedy with Bhama packing her children, dog, cow and even the father-in-law to Rama's house. The invasion of her privacy drives Priya hopping mad and she turns them out in no time!

Then comes the twist in the tale with former boy friend staging a comeback into Priya's life.

Will Rama return to his wife and children? The remainder of the film is all about how Shyam and Bhama go about the task.

‘Rama Shama Bhama’ also has shades of the Bollywood blockbuster ‘Biwi No. 1’, featuring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor.

It is a laugh riot with Kamal Haasan leading from the front. Kamal excels himself in scenes at the airport toilet, the hotel room in Goa and the restaurant. His dialogue delivery in the Hubli-Dharward accent is superb. Mind you, Kamal is not a Kannadiga. Still, he manages to speak the Hubli lingo as if he is a local.

The superstar gets commendable support from Ramesh, Sruthi and Daisy. Sruthi gives Urvashi a run for her money. It is difficult to choose between the two. Such is the quality of their acting. Daisy oozes oomph, as is required of her, in abundant measure. Surprisingly, she proves she can emote as well.

Guru Kiran's music is average. One song stands out – “Raathri Ayuthi Jopana”, rendered by Kamal Haasan himself.

On the whole, ‘Rama Shaama Bhaama’ is a film you can watch in the company of your family. It tickles your funny bone no end.

Over two hours of eminently enjoyable watching. Don't miss it.
