Emttan Mahan review
'Emttan Mahan' A Family EntertainerBy P. SreekumaranFilm critic, ApunKaChoice.Com Winds of a refreshing change are blowing in Tamil cinema. A crop of new directors have come up with quality films in recent times. The latest in the list of innovators is Thirumurugan, who is also the director of the immensely popular serial ‘Mettioli’ on Sun TV. Thirumurugan’s success formula is simple : have a good script, keep it simple and get the right cast. Of course, melodious music and excellent camera work add to the allure of the movie. Thirumurugan
Excellent performance from the cast is an additional incentive for watching the film, which is doing well at the box office, too. Tirumalai alias Emttan (Nasser) is a dictator who brooks no opposition to his word and deed. So much so that even his family consisting of his wife (Saranya), son Krishna (Bharat), daughter (Remya) and uncle (Vadivelu) are made to literally dance to the autocrat’s tune. He owns a provision store and makes his son work hard at the shop. Son Krishna is the antithesis of his father. He is the nice guy who is good to one and all. So, he quietly endures the whims and caprices of his tyrant of a father. Of course, he has a solid supporter in his uncle. Krishna’s college friend (Gazala) has a soft corner for him, but Krishna declines to respond because he is in love with his cousin Janani (Gopika). The boy simply pines for Janani whom he has not met for over 10 years. A family feud has kept the lovers apart. But Krishna gets an opportunity to meet Janani when his grandfather breathes his last. Then comes the twist in the tale. Family members are outraged as the lovers are caught in their moment of intimacy. A livid father turns out Krishna. But Krishna fights against heavy odds, marries Janani and comes good in life. The remainder of the film unfolds the manner in which Krishna softens up his father climaxing in the reconciliation. Nasser is in his elements as the tyrant father. Saranya’s mother is an equal foil for him. But the surprise packages of the film are Bharat and Gopika. Bharat has really gone under the skin of his character and interpreted the role in a convincing manner. The obedient son, the do-gooder and the passionate lover – Bharat has essayed the varying moods of his role with effortless ease. There is no doubt about it. Bharat has evolved as an actor. If Bharat is excellent, Gopika is not far behind. Gorgeous Gops turns in a memorable performance as the lover, who stands by her man in his hour of trial and tribulation. The sparkle of her expressive eyes and a twitch of those lovely lips convey myriad emotions. It is natural acting at its best. Commendable indeed. Vadivelu proves that he is good not only at comedy but also in enacting emotion. His handling of the emotional scenes is amazing. Songs by Vidyasagar are an additional bonus. “Goli Gundu…” and “Unnodu Than” merit special mention. Sevilo Raja cranks an efficient camera. Worth watching Copyright 2008 ApunKaChoice.com.
