'Koodal Nagar' -Worth a watch

Tamil cinema continues to draw sustenance from themes that glorify rural life. ‘Koodal Nagar’, directed by Seenu Ramasamy, is yet another addition to the genre that lays accent on rural-centric themes.

‘Koodal Nagar’ also represents the directorial debut of Seenu. And his maiden attempt at wielding the megaphone is, it must be said, impressive. The best thing about his directorial effort is that it makes simple and straightforward cinematic narration of the theme.

The

other highlight of ‘Koodal Nagar’ is a performance that compels admiration from hero Bharath in a double role. The youngster plays the elder and younger brothers’ roles with a confidence and maturity that comes as a surprise. The dialogue delivery, the body language and the different mannerisms of the brothers – all this has been essayed with the ease of a seasoned veteran. No wonder, Bharat looms large in the film.

The only drawback of the film is that the pace is painfully slow in the first half though it picks up speed in the second half, especially towards the climax.

Heroines Sandhya and Bhavana are also a study in contrast. While Bhavana goes about the job in a subdued manner – much like her performance in ‘Veyil’ – Sandhya infuses her role with great energy and verve.

Suriyan and Chandran (both played by Bharath) are twin brothers. The brothers land in Madurai in search of employment in the wake of the death of their father. Suriyan manages to find himself a job in a leading library. And Chandran takes up the job of an attender in a hospital. The brothers provide a contrast. While Suriyan is the quiet guy, Chandran is an extrovert, devil-may-care type.

Suriyan falls for the charms of Manimekhalai (Bhavana), the daughter of local bigwig, Namasivayam (Mahadevan). Namasivayam uses all his influence to win the assembly elections and becomes the local MLA.

When he comes to know that his daughter is in love with Suriyan, the MLA is furious. And with the help of a gang, he bumps him off.

It is now time for Chandran, who is romancing his neighbour Selvi (Sandhya), to enter the field and try revenge. Does Chandran succeed in settling scores with the MLA? See it for yourself.

Sabesh Murali has come up with a number of good tunes, and Prabhu’s camera brings alive the beauty of Madurai and neighbouring villages.

All in all, Ramasamy’s maiden effort leaves a good impression.
