'Pachaikkili Muthucharam' -Eminently watchable

Gautham Menon is known for his deft directorial touch. In films like ‘Kaka Kaka’, ‘Minnale’ and Vettayadu Vilayadu , Menon has proved that he is second to none when it comes to wielding the megaphone.

His latest flick, ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’ firmly establishes his credentials as a super director.

At

the risk of sounding clichéd, it must be said that ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’ is a trendsetter in Tamil cinema. It has all that you would expect in a quality movie: Directorial excellence, racy narration, element of suspense, excellent music and top-class acting from the cast.

Menon has made the movie in the thriller format, and keeps you on the edge of the seat, as it were. Imaginative editing and fast cuts add to the pleasure of watching the film.

Add to it the excellent performances from the protagonists Sarath kumar and Jyothika, and you have a quality film to savour.

Acting-wise, Jyothika leaves others far behind. It is a sad thought that the doe-eyed beauty will no more adorn the silver screen. One ardently wishes that Jo reverses her decision to call it quits now that she is married.

‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’ is easily one of her best. Her expressive eyes convey myriad emotions with effortless ease. She switches gear from the lovelorn to the menacing with a brilliance rarely seen in Tamil cinema.

Sarath kumar is no great shakes as an actor. He has allowed himself to be trapped in made-to-order larger than life roles which offer not much scope for emoting. But in ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’ you see an entirely different Sarath. Director Menon has been able to extract a mature and controlled performance from him. This film could well be Sarath’s finest hour.

Jo, Sarath and Menon deserve kudos for making ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’ a pleasurable experience.

Venkatesh (Sarath Kumar) is happy-go-lucky young man savouring the delights of his small world comprising his wife Kalyani (Andrea) and son Nanda. A sales representative with a pharmaceutical company Venky commutes to work by train.

The idyllic calm of his life is rudely shattered when his six-year-old son is diagnosed as suffering from diabetes. The stresses and strains that follow fray the bond of affection between the husband and wife. The romance literally goes out of their life, their world having turned upside down.

It is against this murky backdrop that gorgeous Geeta (Jyothika) enters Venky’s life. The two take a liking to each other. They come closer when Geetha empathises with Venky’s anguish.

Then unfolds the denouement which is strikingly different. Will Venky shake himself free off the web of attraction Geetha spins? Will he succeed in restoring marital harmony disturbed by Geetha’s invasion of their world? Watch it yourself.

The surprise package of the film is Andrea. The glamour girl takes the eye with a compelling performance. She fights tooth and nail to safeguard her turf with passionate doggedness. Milind Soman too attracts attention with a cute cameo.

Cinematographer Aravind Krishna and editor Antony have contributed immensely to making ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’ a mood movie with fabulous frames and crisp editing. Even stuntman Shiva rises to the occasion.

Composer Harris Jayaraj’s songs enhance the film’s thriller format. “Unakkullil” and “Un Sirippinil” are two songs that steal over you for their melody and picturisation.

Eminently watchable.
