'Something, Something, Unakkum, Enakkum' Something For Everyone

By P. Sreekumaran

‘Something Something Unakkum Enakkum’ has something for everyone. It is a clean family entertainer, its appeal cutting across the age barriers. And therein lies its success. The movie also provides welcome relief to eyes tired of watching gangster movies that unfortunately have become the bane of present-day Tamil cinema.

Director M. Raja and hero Ravi – incidentally they are brothers – deserve kudos for making it a viewer-friendly affair.

Excellent

direction is not the sole plus point of ‘Something Something’. Cameraman A Venkatesh has also risen to the occasion by framing fabulous vignettes of village life and vibrant countryside bathed in bucolic charm. Devi Sri Prasad’s lilting tunes and crisp editing by Suraj Kavi heighten the pleasure of watching ‘Something Something’. It can verily be said that the flick owes its success to excellent teamwork.

By the way, ‘Something Something’ is the Tamil remake of the Telugu blockbuster Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana . In the original version too Trisha played the female lead and Siddharth the hero. The film also has shades of Bollywood movies ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’ and Maine Pyaar Kiya .

Muthupandi (Prabhu) is an honest son of the soil, who dotes on his sister Kavitha (Trisha). The story unfolds with Kavitha going to her friend Lalitha’s (Richa Pallod) house to attend her marriage.

There she runs into Santosh (Jayam Ravi), son of a rich NRI couple (Bhagyaraj). Cupid strikes and the two fall in love. But Santosh’s mother has other ideas. The mother is egged on by Manivannan who wants Santosh to marry his daughter (Tejasree). In her contempt for the poor, the mother insults both Kavitha and Muthupandi who come to attend the marriage.

Santosh comes to know of this. Wanting to make amends, he gives the slip to his domineering mother at the Dubai airport in transit to London. He lands in Kavitha’s village and apologises to Muthu for his mother’s abominable behaviour, and seeks Muthu’s permission for marrying his sister. But Muthu has a chip on the shoulder about rich people.

So, the brother tells Santosh that he could marry Kavitha on one condition : he should cultivate a piece of land and produce a good harvest. Santosh rises to the occasion and passes the test in flying colours.

Jayam Ravi and Trisha turn in excellent performances as the lead pair. The film is sure to give a big boost to Ravi’s languishing career. Ravi is a picture of youthful enthusiasm and energy. Trisha brings to bear on her role the zest and verve enjoined by the script.

Prabhu gives an excellent performance as the elder brother. In certain frames, he reminds us of his legendary father Sivaji Ganesan. Bhagyaraj, Richa Pallod and Geeta are convincing too in their supportive roles.

At the end of the day, you leave the theatres happy at having watched a clean and beautifully packaged family entertainer.
