She was profound and they appear insignificant. She was dignified and they seem brash. She was honorable and they sometimes shock.
The comparison between the majestic Suchitra Sen and her granddaughters, Riya and Raima Sen, are kind of odd.
Though it is unfair to compare but the contrasts are too sharp to be overlooked. The decay started with daughter Moon Moon Sen's debut in films. The actress never did anything substantial in any film apart from plunging into swimming pools in costumes.
Moon Moon was extremely attractive and got written about more for her looks and liasions. But then Suchitra too was a classic beauty. The difference lay in the way Suchitra carried herself. Tollygunge still swears by the way people felt intimidated by her. Staring or making a pass at Suchitra was unthinkable.
Riya and Raima Sen have appeared in commercials and video albums but are yet to be launched in films. There does not seem to be effort on any director-producer's part to take initiative either. The grand dame could come to the little girls' rescue. But Suchitra is a cancer patient today. She has completely retired from films and does not want to be remotely associated with it.
Or is it shame that makes her elusive? After all, from the kind of tallness Suchitra Sen displayed to the momentary teasers of Riya-Raima, the fall is regrettable. It is sad that an actress capable of delivering a film like 'Aandhi' has to watch her blood indulging in bod-shows in cheap toilet soap commercials.
