The celebrated poet-filmmaker Gulzar seems to be making great leap forward in his creative orbit.
Having put direction on the shelve for sometime the man had been busy writing poetry and lyrics – his quill commanding the wide range from ‘kaynaat’ (Universe) to ‘bachchon ki duniya’. However, in the coming days, we may see more of the director, than the poet.
The news is that he has joined hands with Doordarshan once again. According to the sources, Gulzar has been asked by Doordarshan to make a 52-episode series on the works of the legendary author Munshi Premchand. The series will be produced and directed by Gulzar, and fully funded by Doordarshan.
Earlier, in a similar arrangement, Gulzar was invited by DD to do a series on Vikram Seth’s novel ‘Suitable Boy.’ The project, however, was shelved following some misunderstandings between DD and the author regarding the telecast rights.
Of late, Gulzar has been busy writing lyrics for private albums like ‘Bindaas Bandar’ (The Children’s album), ‘Sunset Point’ (with Vishal Bhardwaj) and the latest musical feast by Ustad Amzad Ali Khan – ‘Vaada’.
Producing and directing a series on Munshi Premchand’s works will certainly be a welcome respite to him. Moreover, his fans will be waiting eagerly to see how the director of ‘Mirza Ghalib’ now translates the works of the legendary author Munshi Premchand on the small screen.
