Tabu and Tollywood's reigning screen queen Rituparna Sengupta would vie for the top spot in the first international movie awards for Bengali cinema to be announced in New York on April 17.

While Tabu was nominated in the best actress category for her performance in 'Abar Aranye', Gautam Ghose's much acclaimed sequel to Satyjit Ray's 'Aranyer Din Ratri', Sengupta made it to the final list for Tarun Majumdar's 'Alo'.

Announcing the nominations here, chairperson of the International Indo-Bangla Kala Music Award 2003 Chiranjit Chakraborty said Majumdar had made it to the best director category for 'Alo' alongside Haranath Chakraborty for the blockbuster 'Nater Guru'.

Aishwarya Rai-starrer 'Chokher Bali' directed by Rituparno Ghosh and 'Abar Aranye' would compete in the best parallel cinema category at the first global awards constituted exclusively for Bengali films produced in West Bengal and Bangladesh, he said.

National award winning director Buddhadev Dasgupta, whose latest release 'Mondo Meyer Upakhayan' won critical acclaim in the festival circuit worldwide, would get the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for Direction, Debu Ghosh CEO of the New York-based event management firm KMP said.

A special jury award would be given posthumously to actor Samit Bhanja, who featured in a number of Bengali and Hindi movies including Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Guddi', Ray's 'Aranyer Din Ratri' and its 2003 sequel.

In the popular movie category, 'Sabuj Sathi' and 'Santrash' were nominated while actors Prasenjit ('Mayer Aanchal') and Jeet ('Nater Guru') were short-listed for the best actor award.
