HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | HAPPENINGS Yash Chopra clarifies on Mangal Pandey26th Sept 2005 09.08 IST By Agencies Producer-Director Yash Chopra , who is distributor of the film ‘Mangal Pandey: The Rising ‘,on Sunday said he has never claimed that Mangal Pandey was not a freedom fighter and removed his counsel who had made such a statement in Delhi High Court without seeking his instructions. "I have never made such a statement and the lawyer has wrongly said so on his behalf," Chopra said 
He further said that he has sent a letter canceling the services of the lawyer for making statements on his behalf without his knowledge. During a hearing of the case in Delhi High Court on September 21, Mukul Rohtagi, the counsel for Chopra questioned the authenticity of plaintiff's claim that they were descendents of Pandey and said he was not a freedom fighter. Chopra said he was yet to appoint a counsel for him to represent him in the court as the next hearing is in November. "I hold Pandey in high esteem and had purchased the film for distribution because the film is about a man who was involved in starting the freedom struggle," Chopra added. Raghunath Pandey, Vice Principal of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in New Delhi and his son Omkar Nath Pandey - descendants of the martyr's brother Lalit Pandey - had filed a suit seeking an unconditional apology from all those involved in the making of the film for allegedly showing Mangal Pandey as an alcoholic involved in a relationship with a prostitute. The plaintiffs, hailing from Nagwa in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, accused defendants of deliberately depicting sexuality and drama to make it a masala movie.
