Leaders watch Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara

Even as the political temperature soared on a cool Sunday evening, some of the country's leading political figures took time off to enjoy a new film by versatile actor Anupam Kher .

The occasion was the special screening, at the Films Division auditorium in New Delhi, of Kher's latest venture Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara , a film which explores the complexities of human psyche.

BJP President L K Advani, Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and former Human Resources Minister Murli Manohar Joshi besides the Army Chief J J Singh were among those present to savour the special occasion.

Kher said former Prime Minister and veteran BJP leader Atal Behari Vajpayee was to attend the screening, but cancelled at the last moment due to personal reasons.

Congress MP Rajiv Shukla, BJD MP B Mehtaab, theatre personality M K Raina besides several other eminent personalities lined up to watch the movie, which hit the box office nearly two months ago.

Known for his creative ability, Kher plays the role of a retired professor suffering from dementia who one fine morning starts thinking that it was he who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.

Based on Jahnu Barua's script, the film explores the complexities of the human pysche as it sets out to unveil the childhood trauma which makes him believe that he had killed the father of the nation.

Asked why he organised a special screening, Kher said "when you make a film that depicts human values, tells the story of a national leader and politics, I thought I should show it to the people who mattered."

Kher, who had essayed many a role effortlessly, said the character of Professor Uttam Chaudhary was "by far the most difficult role he had played."
