Indian films create waves in Pakistan

For the third year running, Indian films have created waves at the Kara film festival, winning accolades as well as a heap of awards at Pakistan's most prestigious international filmfest.

That Indian films continue to hold a special place in the heart of the common man in Pakistan was borne out by the host of awards bagged by Indian films screened at the festival, including the best actor award for veteran actor and filmmaker Anupam Kher for Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara , the best director award for young & promising filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor and the best supporting actor for child actor Shweta Prasad for Iqbal .

While Kher was not present to receive his best actor award, announced at the conclusion of the ten-day film festival on Sunday, filmmaker Subhash Ghai , the producer of 'Iqbal', received the award on behalf of the Kukunoor and Shweta Prasad, sources in Mukta Arts, Ghai's film production venture said.

In his acceptance speech, Ghai, who was at the festival in connection with the screening of a retrospective of his films there, said, ''It is heartening to know that Pakistan is recognizing Indian cinema and in the process bringing people of the two countries through the medium of cinema. I humbly accept their gracious gesture to Indian cinema, by firstly screening my film 'Iqbal' at the opening of the festival and, now, honouring it with the best director and the best supporting actor award.''

''We in India appreciate the gracious gesture of the Pakistani government in screening Indian films at the Kara film festival before the people of Pakistan, who love Indian movies and film stars,'' Ghai told a news agency.

'Iqbal', a moving film about a deaf and dumb boy ''emerging triumphant in face of all odds'', was screened as the in inaugural film at the festival, which opened on December 3.

The retrospective of Ghai's films included Khalnayak , Taal , Pardes and Kisna , the sources said.

This was Ghai's first visit to Pakistan as India's Goodwill Ambassador.
