HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | HAPPENINGS Science site named after Jackie Chan01st Mar 2006 09.43 IST By Agencies The name Jackie Chan has always been synonymous with daredevil stunts and martial arts movies, but, now, it will also be linked to medical research. The Australian National University in Canberra will name its new science building the Jackie Chan Science Centre in recognition of a large donation the actor made to the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR). 
Although Chan is based in Hong Kong, he lived in Canberra for a brief time as a young man and his mother, Lee Lee Chan, was a long-time resident. She lost her battle with cancer in early 2002, and Chan visited the centre in December 2002 to make a donation in her memory. ANU said Chan had always been a great supporter of medical research at the facility. According to Professor Judith Whitworth, director of JCSMR, Chan was not well-educated as a child and as a result, was now passionate about providing all children with educational opportunities. "Jackie has a strong commitment to the education of young people and to provide them with opportunities that were not available to him when he was a child," Professor Whitworth said. Chan's large international fan base would help raise the profile of the centre and help attract more young people into scientific research, Prof Whitworth said. "His name will be a huge draw card in bringing kids onto the ANU campus as part of the ACT science tourism circuit and switching them on to the excitement of science and medical research," she said. The centre is still under construction and is expected to be ready for use in the first week of April. Chan is expected to make a trip to Australia for the official opening later this year.
