After a ‘self-imposed’ break from the world of cinema, the talented dusky actress Nandita Das will soon be seen in a new film based on a story by Jnanpith award-winning writer Mahashweta Devi.

"It's a Marathi film being directed by Chitra Palekar (actor-director Amol Palekar 's wife). The film is adapted from a story by Mahashweta Devi. Atul Kulkarni is my co-star in this film that should be released by this year," said the internationally acclaimed actress in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Nandita is also doing an "untitled" English film with Rahul Bose , which will be directed by cinematographer-turned-director Santosh Sivan .

"I wasn't doing any films for some time as nothing really excited me. But that period is over now. I do have a couple of good projects on hand," says the choosy actress who represented India in Cannes Film Festival last year, sharing the honours with the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai and Bollywood sex-kitten Mallika Sherawat .

Talking about her experience of working with Shivan, she says "it was a pleasure to work with him".

Nandita, known for her critically loved performances in 'Fire', 1947: Earth , 'Bawander' and who has many regional films to her credit, says some Hindi films are also "under consideration".

"We are discussing a couple of Hindi projects also. But it is all in the processing stage. It's too early to talk about them. And anyway, I don't choose a film based on the language. It is the subject that matters," she avers.

"I am ready to leave everything for theatre. I am ready to give any amount of time for theatre. Nothing beats the charm of theatre," says Nandita whose last production saw her teaming up with veteran Shabana Azmi for a play on 'Diary of Anne Frank'.

Arts, she is convinced, if presented cautiously and not overdone, have the ability to "espouse" any cause.

"Arts do have a social relevance. Be it theatre or cinema, any form of art has the potential to espouse any cause. But then it should not be one of those in-your-face kind of things. It has to be done in a subtle fashion. You see, no one likes to be told what to do and how to do it."

Nandita is "happy" with the "broadening horizons" of theatre as more people are showing their "inclination" to the world of theatre.

"Earlier theatre was very insular. The same people would do it and the same people would watch it. But now the numbers are growing. You have so many people doing theatre these days and audience response is also good. I am told that the annual theatre festival of the National School of Drama was a big hit and all tickets were sold out. I think that is just so encouraging," she says.
