Suchitra Sen shortlisted for Dada Saheb Phalke award

Suchitra Sen, the legendary Bengali film star, seems to be leading the short list of nominees for this year's Dada Saheb Phalke award. Lyricist Gulzar and actress Sulochana are also on that list.

But the real question is whether Suchitra Sen will emerge from her self-imposed seclusion to receive the award.

The last time she appeared in public was in 1978. More recently, someone did sneak a photograph when she went for her voter ID snap, but the star was reportedly displeased.

Now, the Information and Broadcasting minister wants the Dada Saheb Phalke award for her, but even getting the word across is a challenge, leave alone her convincing her to receive the award in person.

"I know Suchitra Sen and her family well. But that doesn't mean that I have talked to any of them about the award. Actually, she is very reluctant. I don't know why she is so reluctant to appear in public," said Subrata Mukherjee, Congress Leader.

That Suchitra Sen more than merits the award belies debate. From 1953 to the mid-70s, she lit up the Bengali screen with a presence that is yet unmatched.

‘Shaptapadi’, ‘Saat Pake Bandha’ and ‘Sandhya Deeper Shika’ are classics, as are ‘Devdas’, ‘Mamata’ and ‘Aandhi’.

Aparna Sen, who was a debutant when Suchitra was at her peak, wanted to make a documentary on Suchitra but never got the nod, and she too respects the Suchitra mystique.

"I don't think she doesn't want the adoration she deserves. She has that adoration. I think disappearing at the peak of her career was a very intelligent move, as the legend lives on and she is a legend," said Aparna Sen.

However, the question is whether the legend will come to life or not.

Suchitra Sen doesn't have fans, she has devotees, and they can only pray for a glimpse of the star who is woven into so many dreams.
