Chargesheet filed against Maxim editor in Khushboo case

Tamil Nadu police have filed a chargesheet against the Editor of UK-based magazine Maxim and four others in the case relating to publishing a morphed photograph of South Indian actress Khushboo in skimpy attire.

The photograph, published in the first Indian edition of the magazine in January 2006, had generated a controversy and the actress filed a police complaint against those involved after she refused to accept a compromise from Maxim's side.

Crime Branch Inspector Inbakumar said that five of the accused Editor Sunil Mehra, Art Director Anjan Das, Publisher and Printer Xavier Collaco, Deputy General Manager (Circulation) Deepak Bhatt and Regional Circulation Manager (Chennai) Fazil Husain Khan have been named in the chargesheet in connection with publication of the morphed photograph.

While Bhatt and Khan have already obtained anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court in the case, the other three were denied bail, both in the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court, Inbakumar said.

The chargesheet in the case was filed before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at Egmore in Chennai under different sections of IPC and a section of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

The publisher, Media Trans Asia India Pvt. Ltd, had filed a petition at the Madras High Court for quashing the FIR, naming Collacco as one of the accused in the case, which is still pending, police said.

When the issue started hotting up in January last, the Crime Branch police immediately clamped down on the sale of Maxim in Chennai and seized 150 copies of the magazine from the stands in Chennai.

Khushboo welcomed filing of chargesheet and said that she would wait for the final outcome of the case.

"Justice is done only when people like those associated with the magazine, Maxim, who published an obscene photograph of mine, realise that they can't take women for granted," Khushboo said in Chennai.

Khushboo added, "they (the accused) should feel the same pain I felt the day the obscene photographs in the magazine were published."

"It is absolutely absurd that magazines like Maxim play such dirty pranks with a view that celebrities will take it sportively," Khushboo said.
