Remakes of old popular films reflected a "bankruptcy of ideas", according to veteran actor Anupam Kher .
Kher said that there was no shortage of ideas in the country and there should be no reason why people should remake the old ones.
"If films flop, people will themselves refrain from making them," Kher, who is a member secretary of the Chandigarh Tourism Advisory Forum, said in Chandigarh after attending its meeting on Wednesday.
Without saying if J.P. Dutta – directed Umrao Jaan had failed to enthuse the audiences more than Muzaffar Ali's earlier film of the 1980s, Kher said "you cannot replace nostalgia".
"Those moments are part of our lives. You cannot remake them", he added.
Kher, however, said that as an actor he may act in such remake films but if he was a director or a producer he would definitely avoid venturing into such projects.
He said he regarded the current period in Hindi cinema as its "golden period" and added "this is an era of professionals now".
Asked if he had any plans to turn a director himself, he said currently he was writing a script and by March next year he should take a plunge in this field.
"I am working on making a romantic comedy," the versatile actor said.
