Bollywood star Jackie Shroff has received many accolades for his on-screen performances, but the latest one was different as it came from the people of Marathwada region where he spent his childhood.
Jackie was a tad emotional while accepting the Devgiri Ratna award from Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil in Mumbai Wednesday night.
"It is an honour to receive an award from people of the land I grew up in," he said.
The award ceremony was organised by the Marathwada Vikas Mandal, an organisation engaged in socio-cultural and educational work for people belonging to Marathwada.
Jackie spent his childhood at Udgir in Latur district.
Others who were presented the award were Mangesh Borgaokar, a finalist in a popular singing talent show on Zee TV's Marathi channel, and noted bhajan singer Godavari Munde.
Patil said he was a fan of Munde's devotional music and expected Borgaokar to make it big in Hindi films.
Jackie, who sat through a three-hour Marathi Kavi Sammelan (poetry recital), said Patil was a "sincere and dedicated" minister. "I have seen many ministers but no one like him," he said.
Responding to the demand by Mandal President Dilip Mane for setting up a Marathwada Bhawan in Mumbai, Patil assured him that "both myself and Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who is from Marathwada, will extend all cooperation to realise this project".
