Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty has said the issue of Hollywood star Richard Gere kissing her at an AIDS charity event in New Delhi was blown "terribly" out of proportion.
"The Indian media kind of went overboard with that one shot," 31-year-old Shilpa, who is in Australia to promote her latest film Metro , told Nine Network, adding "that's the price one has to pay for being a celebrity."
"He (Gere) came on and wanted to do this impromptu jig. He was doing this step from (his film) ‘Shall We Dance’ ... he was just being very sweet."
The incident had been blown "terribly, terribly" out of proportion, Shilpa said.
Shilpa said that the majority of Indians do not feel that way and "it was the lunatic fringe" that took over.
Shilpa told the Australian Associated Press that the scandal had been good for her new movie. "It's great timing" and "hopefully, people will now be interested to see what I actually do," she said.
A Jaipur court had directed arrest of Gere, 57, and summoned Shilpa following a complaint by a lawyer over their public kiss.
Shilpa, who rose to international fame after overcoming a racism row to win the latest British version of Big Brother, denied reports that she would be entering the Australian Big Brother show. "I was offered it, but I am not doing it."
