Khushboo bracing herself for fresh row

Popular actress Khushboo , who was slapped with a plethora of cases for her remarks on pre-marital sex two years ago, is bracing herself for a fresh row, following her alleged remarks against the judiciary.

Contending that her comments at a seminar on 'Justice - A Privilege or a Right?' organised by FICCI Ladies Organisation on Monday last attracted contempt of court, a Chennai advocate belonging to the PMK, has issued a legal notice to her, demanding an unconditional apology.

However, the articulate actress is undeterred and has decided to stand her ground.

"I've not apologised even during the earlier controversy on my remarks on pre-marital sex and I am not going to do so even now," Khushboo said.

Khushboo said neither she nor her lawyer had received any legal notice yet. "I don't want to comment anything on the issue at this juncture and I'll decide on my next step only after receiving the said notice," she added.

Recalling her bitter experience during the controversy over her statement on pre-marital sex in 2005, Khushboo said in the seminar that 24 cases were pending against her on the issue, filed by people with vested interests.

The advocate, K Balu, belonging to the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), which spearheaded a campaign against Khushboo for allegedly 'insulting' Tamil women by her remarks that pre-marital sex had become common in the state, said the actress had made certain remarks at the seminar faulting the judiciary.

The latest row has raised the hackles of women activists, who condemned the practice of "targetting" women in public life in order to get the media's attention.

Well-known activist and advocate Sudha Ramalingam opined that Khushboo's remarks would in no way attract contempt of court.

"The right to freedom of expression is being throttled by some people for personal gains. It is high time that the right to differ and the right to give vent to one's feelings is reinforced in democratic India," she said.

"We'll stand by Khushboo on the issue and fight for the freedom of expression," Sudha Ramalingam said.
