HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | HAPPENINGS HC notice to Bachchan on FEMA 'violation'22nd June 2007 09.00 IST By Agencies The Bombay High Court has issued a notice to Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan on a PIL against him, alleging violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice S C Dharmadhikari issued the notice Thursday while hearing a public interest litigation filed by a journalist, seeking CBI inquiry into the alleged violation of FEMA. The notice is returnable within four weeks. 
Nirmal Thakur, a Mumbai journalist, has alleged Bachchan indulged in foreign currency transaction without the mandatory permission of the Reserve Bank of India, thus violated FEMA. As a proof of this transaction – where Bachchan allegedly agreed to arrange Rs 10 crore and also a sum of USD six million – the petitioner is relying on minutes of the meeting wherein the purported deal was struck. He claimed an affidavit signed by Bachchan and submitted to Esplanade Court in Mumbai bears out his allegations. The said affidavit and minutes of the meeting were submitted to the Esplanade Court (a Metropolitan Magistrate's Court) during the proceedings of a case in that court, the PIL stated. But the petitioner does not have the copies of these. The petitioner also alleges the Bachchan family is guilty of tax evasion, and cites Jaya Bachchan 's declaration at the time of filing nomination for Rajya Sabha that she and her husband are worth Rs 227 crore as a proof of their "illegal amassing of wealth". Authorities such as Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Finance Ministry, and Central Board of Direct Taxes have been made party to the PIL for not probing alleged violation of law by the mega superstar.
