Danny Denzongpa 's versatile career has touched another high with the veteran actor acting in his 150th film – a tale of a family's encounter with the army shot in the snow-capped mountains of Ladakh in black and white.

Danny plays role of Karma in Shivajee Chandrabhushan's "Frozen", which is a sombre journey of Lasya (Gauri), a girl in her late teens, who lives with her father and younger brother in the remote mountainous village.

"Danny is a fabulous actor. Even if I had an iota of doubt about his acting -- however Mongoloid he may look -- I would not have chosen him," says Shivajee.

And then his looks. "Danny perfectly fitted into my scheme of things," Shivajee said.

Danny was quite impressed by the script and the black and white photographs we took of Ladakh, the producer-director says.

The film, which won a special award at the Osian's film fest last month, also stars Yashpal Sharma and Raj Zutsi.

All was going on well with Karma's family. One day, the army moves in and settles a few hundred yards from their doorstep. The family, which must now adjust to this intrusive presence, is unsettled. Brusquely awakened to this reality, its dreamlike routine is disturbed and unforeseen complications set in.

Shivajee says he did initially think of making the film in black and white.

"It is not that black and white is my preferred choice of expression. Black and white was really a demand of the situation (location) and of the script also.

"It so happened that the photographs we took during a recce turned out to be monochromatic. It was all black, white, grey and brown. And the idea struck immediately," he says, adding the venture no doubt was much costlier.

"The landscape of Ladakh is very stark. The colours are predominantly shades of amber. In the winters there is not a speck of green to be seen. The foliage is reduced to skeletons. The northern sky is deep blue, in contrast to the deep black shadows the sun casts," he says.

Why did he name his film "Frozen"?

"The story is set against the backdrop of these extreme conditions. For the characters, this is part of their daily life. This terrain and landscape were chosen consciously because it did justice to the concept of people coming together, but instead of sharing warmth and affection, ending up in a state we call Frozen," he says.

Shivajee wanted to portray a different Ladakh in his film.

"I wanted to strip off Ladakh from its oriental exotic location. Whenever Ladakh is shown in movies, you see wind chimes and prayer wheels," he says.

Shivajee says he is now working on a project, which is set in rural Rajasthan.

"A woman who travels to a new place suddenly realises that her roots are there," he says about the story with elaborating further.

Saeed Mirza appreciated "Frozen" very much and is very keen on my next project. "There are two genres of films -- honest and dishonest and I am definitely going to make an honest venture," he says.
