Boman Irani credits Sanjay Dutt for his success

Versatile Bollywood actor Boman Irani , who starred with Sanjay Dutt in Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai says but for Sanju's help, he and Arshad Warsi wouldn't have been where they are today.

"Sanjay is a good soul and a generous person. Let me tell me you something, Arshad Warsi and I would not be what we are if we didn't have his generosity. Despite being the hero of the film, the two supporting actor who were not even parallel heroes got so much out of the films," he said, and praised his strength to have braved the tough times.

"He's been very tough mentally. I am amazed at his resilience. Not just last few months or fourteen years but all his life he has had a tough time. I can't comment on the legal battles in his life but I can pray for him and say that I am with him," says the lensman-turned-actor.

Coming to films, the debacle of Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag , a remake of Ramesh Sippy 's Sholay , has again sparked off the debate on - To remake or not to remake.

Irani says creative expressions of all kinds should be allowed. "People should be allowed to do what they want to," says Boman, adding, "Do what you want. If you are good at it, you will succeed but if you do it wrongly you will fail."

He adds, "We must remember that a film is not a sequel or a remake but a film." You must take a film - whether it's a remake, a sequel or original - by whether it is a good cinema and good entertainment, says the actor who plays a role in the Farhan Akhtar 's remake of Don by the same name.

Sequels have been made over the last 50 years in Hollywood but nobody talks about them. 'Ben Hur', which won 11 academy awards and is considered as one of the greatest films of all time was also a remake, he says.

And box-office result of such films is not a big issue, he maintains. "So many originals flop otherwise," says the actor who is playing to host a Bollywood-based quiz show called 'Bollywood Ka Baap' on Filmy channel. On film front, he'll be seen next in films like Love Story 2050 , ‘Munnabhai Chale Amerika’, etc.

The actor who got tremendous success for his comical antics in films like 'Munnabhai MBBS', 'Lage Raho Munnabhai', Khosla Ka Ghosla says, "I have done equal number of serious roles like plays like 'I'm not Bajirao', 'Mahatma vs Gandhi' and films like 'Let's Talk', Being Cyrus , 'Don', Eklavya etc. Now, when I am approached with comedy roles, I tell producers that I wish to do something else as well," he says adding that variety is what he's looking at now.

"I will not say that I have succeeded completely but I try to reinvent myself. I will not do one type of cinema. I have done the needful," he quips.

Boman has worked with some of the biggest name in Bollywood like Shabana Azmi , Om Puri , Naseeruddin Shah , Amitabh Bachchan , Shah Rukh Khan etc says that the best way to learn from them is have discussion with them.

"It makes your life richer," he says, adding that real acting is telling a lie that you are the character you portray and making sure that audience and you too believe that convincingly." He says that observation is his real strength as an actor. "I have learned so many thing about life. I can tell you that observation teaches you a lot."

So does he have any dream roles? He says you can't really have a dream role. "A role is dream-role if public accepts you in the role. I think I was good in ‘Eklavya’ but public didn't think that ways. And film flopped."
