HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | HAPPENINGS Rahul Bose emphasizes importance of team sports17th Dec 2007 09.00 IST By Agencies Team sports like rugby and cricket empower people and can help in dissolving social boundaries, actor and sports-enthusiast Rahul Bose has said. Bose, a member of the Indian national rugby team, had a brief interaction with children in Srinagar where he showed off some rugby techniques to promote the sport in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Rugby, or for that matter any other team sport like cricket or football, helps in dissolving boundaries and inculcating discipline besides helping in certain degree of emancipation and empowerment," Bose told reporters in Srinagar. The actor, who is working with 90 under-privileged Muslim girls in Mumbai, said he could feel a change in the girls through the use of rugby and cinema. "When the girls took to rugby, you could feel the change in their attitude. Similarly, when they were given a camera for making stories, they could enter a room full of men and ask questions. A girl would not be allowed in such rooms if they were not empowered, in this case with a camera," he said. The star of films such as 'Jhankar Beats' and Pyar Ke Side Effects said he experienced the dissolution of social barriers himself while playing at the Bombay Gymkhana grounds. "There were some slum children who lived nearby. When I started playing, they used to call me Rahul saab ... now they call me Rahul. Initially, they used to say sorry after a tackle, now that is gone," he said.
