Cinema hall owners unsure about 'Jodhaa Akbar' release

Cinema hall owners in Rajasthan were on Thursday still unsure about screening of the Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – Hrithik Roshan starrer Jodhaa Akbar amid aggressive protests by Rajput groups against "distortion of historical facts" in the film, which is due for a countrywide release on Friday.

Activists of the Karni Sena wrote letters in blood against the film's release and submitted it to theatre owners while Bollywood distributors were trying to persuade them to call off their stir at the last minute.

Karni Sena patron Lokendra Kalvi said they would not stop the film but the Vasundhara Raje government would be held "responsible" if any untoward incidents occurred.

"The Rajputs cannot tolerate any distortion of historical facts, especially relations between the Mughal emperor Akbar and Jodhabai," he told reporters in Jaipur on Thursday.

"We are still undecided on whether to release the film in 30 cinema halls of the state, including nine in Jaipur," film distribution executive Kailash Sharma said.

He said Anil Thadani, husband of former actress Raveena Tandon who is also a well-known distributor for Mumbai territory, was holding talks with the Karni Sena.

"Anilji has called them from Mumbai over the phone. Let's wait and watch the outcome," he said.

The Home Department has meanwhile decided not to ban the Ashutosh Gowarikar film and directed that law and order be maintained around all theatres of the state, Jaipur District Collector Khil Arora said.

The Rajasthan High Court had Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking restraining orders against leaders of Rajput Sabha and Karni Sena but asked the government to ensure law and order.
