Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan Monday got relief from the Supreme Court in the Barabanki land deal case and notice from UP govt for paying less stamp duty.

The apex court refused to order investigation into the controversy involving Bachchan in the Barabanki land deal case in Uttar Pradesh.

The apex court dismissed the petition filed by UP government challenging the Allahabad High Court's order restraining it from initiating any criminal, civil or revenue proceedings against Bachchan in the case.

The High Court had on December 11 last given a clean chit to Bachchan, observing that there was no finding that the actor "himself committed any fraud or manipulated any surreptitious entry in the revenue records".

Senior advocate K K Venugopal, appearing for the state government, contended that there was a case of manipulation in revenue records which ultimately benefited Bachchan and it needed to be investigated.

The High Court had disposed of Bachchan's petition challenging the order of Additional Commissioner of Faizabad quashing the allotment of the land in Daulatpur village of Barabanki district.

But in fresh trouble for the Big B, the Barabanki district authorities Monday issued a notice to him accusing him of undervaluing the stamp duty on a plot of land he bought in Barabanki.

Additional District Magistrate (Finance) of Barabanki Shirish Dubey issued the notice to Bachchan through his local lawyer Pradeep Roy and fixed May 5 for a reply, Dubey said.

Dubey issued the notice accusing Bachchan of violating relevant sections of the Indian Stamp Duty Act on the basis of a report filed to him by Tehsildar of Barabanki Anil Kumar.

The ADM (Finance) said the cost of the land was Rs 843,639 but it was shown as Rs 6,000 less and accordingly the actor paid Rs 695 less in stamp duty.

Roy, Bachchan's lawyer, dismissed the charge of paying less stamp duty as "baseless" and alleged it was an attempt to malign Bachchan's image. A defamation suit would be filed, he added.

Roy said it was the responsibility of the district administration to assess the stamp duty and they should have checked at the time of payment.

The plot was purchased by Bachchan during the rule of Mulayam Singh Yadav in UP and on January 27 this year he laid the foundation stone of a girls' college there naming it after his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
