Life imitates art – Slumdog kid's home razed

A week after the house of Rubina’s co-star Azharuddin (who played the kid Salim) was demolished by the BMC, Rubina’s home in Garib Nagar slums in suburban Mumbai was bulldozed in a drive to clear encroachers from the land that, officials say, belongs to Railways.

According to eyewitness versions, at around 11 am on Wednesday, the railway police and the demolition squad arrived in Garib Nagar and began razing the shanties that had recently come up in the area. They demolished about 20 to 25 shanties and among them was the house in which the 9-year-old Rubina lived.


Rubina, who played the homeless girl Latika in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, was in a nearby market when her house was demolished. She says she ran back as soon as she learnt that her house was being brought down, but by the time she returned it was razed.

Her uncle goes on to allege that Rubina’s father was beaten up by the demolition squad after he protested.

Standing in front of the rubble of what used to be her home, Rubina was in tears.
“I don’t know where I will sleep tonight,” she said.
