'Evano Oruvan' -A gripping but disturbing film

By P. Sreekumaran

‘Evano Oruvan’ is a Madhavan show all the way. The actor with a next-door boy image has played the protagonist in the film, besides producing and writing the script for it.

And he has acquitted himself creditably in all the roles. ‘Evano Oruvan’ is a serious film that seriously tries to tackle a serious subject: the corrupt system that makes life miserable for the common man.

The

underlying message is that it is not possible for one man to effect changes in society unless the effort is backed up by others.

The protagonist Sreedhar Vasudevan (brilliantly portrayed by Madhavan) is an honest bank officer who lives with his wife and two children on the outskirts of Chennai.

The upright Vasu refuses to bribe others, nor would he accept a bribe. His efforts to turn an honest penny is of course ridiculed by others who thrive on the corrupt system. So much so even Vasu’s wife Vatsala (Sangeeta) nags him constantly and scoffs at his inability to come good.

The man dotes on his two kids, a son and daughter. He is eager to ensure good education for the daughter. But he won’t pay the Rs 35,000 the school demands by way of donation. In the process, he earns the wrath of his wife, relatives and friends.

Unable to take the taunts any longer, Vasu explodes in a fit of anger and takes on the system single-handedly and suffers for it. The man tries to find a solution to the problems in his own way. The result is a gripping climax.

Director Nishikanth shines a fierce beam on the middle classes’ refusal to act its way out of trouble. The cowardice and lack of initiative are all brought out with telling effect by the director through a series of well-executed shots. The frames radiate energy, passion and an intensity rarely seen in Tamil movies. Good job, Nishikant.

Sangeeta is a close second in the acting department. The nagging Vatsala of ‘Evano Oruvan’ will haunt you even after you leave the theatre. Seeman also gives a polished performance as an honest police officer who is sympathetic to the hero.

GV Prakash has come out with a number of tunes which do full justice to the mood of the film, which is the Tamil version of the Marathi original titled ‘Dombivli Fast’ and directed by Nishikant himself. Sanjay Jadav’s brooding camera composes excellent frames in consonance with the theme of the movie.

‘Evano Oruvan’ is a must-watch film, though it will leave you disturbed.

Recommended.
