'Anjathey' - An Enthralling Experience

Director Mysskin is a class act. That is for sure.

He made an impressive debut with ‘Chithiram Pesuthadi’, which gave Malayalam heroine, Bhavana the big break in Tamil cinema she had been looking forward to. The film went down well with both the cognoscenti and the people.

Mysskin

maintains the high standards he displayed in ‘Chithiram Pesuthadi’ in his latest movie, ‘Anjathey’, too.

True, the film does not flaunt thematic novelty. But it is the taut and imaginative script, written by Mysskin himself, that makes ‘Anjathey’ an enthralling experience.

Of course, the deft directorial touches that Mysskin brings to bear on the film adds to the feel of the flick.

The only drawback is that it is a bit too long – more than three hours. A spot of intelligent editing would have made it trimmer.

Be that as it may, the likes of Mysskin are an asset to the Tamil cinema, still floundering under the typical masala, run-of-the-mill films that portray heroes as larger-than-life figures taxing imagination.

Mysskin gets admirable support from the protagonists who have turned in a standout performance.

Here goes the story.

The film is about two youths whose friendship turns sour.

Satyavan ( Narain ) and Kripa (Ajmal Ameer) are childhood friends. Satya is everything that Kripa is not. While Satya is short-tempered and quick to pick up fights, Kripa is a sober guy who is also responsible. His dream is to become a sub-inspector and he goes about achieving it with clinical efficiency.

As for Satya, his father is angry with him because the son fails to live up to his expectations. Their fathers (M.S. Bhaskar) and (Livingstone) are constables.

Kripa’s sister Uttara ( Vijayalakshmi ) initially is miffed with Satya who, she feels, is a negative influence on Kripa.

But then, the plot takes a twist with Satya saving Uttara from the hands of the villain, Daya (Prasanna). But Satya’s father is not impressed. He humiliates Satya in front of everyone.

Satya then takes it as a prestigious issue to become an S-I. He ‘manages’ it, but Kripa fails. The incident leads to the parting of ways between the childhood buddies.

But Uttara now starts loving Satya, much to the annoyance of Kripa.

The friends’ paths cross again when Satya tries to rescue two girls kidnapped by Daya. To his horror, he realizes that Kripa is now assisting Daya in the nefarious ventures. How he manages to save him and Uttara forms the remainder of the story.

Acting-wise, Narain excels as Satya. Ajmal’s Kripa is equally impressive. Vijayalakshmi’s Uttara is utterly adorable. Her expressive eyes and lovely lips convey myriad emotions. The girl will go far in the profession, Prasanna springs a surprise with his negative enactment of Daya’s role. Ponvannan's police chief is adequate.
‘Anjathey’, despite the length is a film that impresses you. Well done, Mysskin!
