'Kurukshetra' A furious battle on slippery ground

Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh Manjrekar seem like birds of the same feather. After surprising everyone with their previous offering Vaastav, the duo once again join hands to repeat the magic.

Kurukshetra is the story of a brawny police officer, who vows to bring a minister's delinquent son to book.. His fearlessness and bravery leaves an indelible mark even on an underworld don's psyche. The baddie begins to admire him and is literally at his beck and call. The idea of a don admiring a cop after taking a sound beating from him is a bit hard to swallow.

The first baddie to come under ACP Prithvi's baton is the don of illegal business Iqbal Pasina (Mukesh Rishi). Not only does Iqbal bite the dust but, impressed by ACP's valor, becomes his ardent admirer. So much that he is willing to lay down his life for him.

The

story gathers momentum when the Chief minister Babu Rao Deshmukh's son Amber, alongwith his friend Rohit, rapes a girl named Gita. The eternal good-doer ACP again lifts his baton and vows to punish the culprits.

The story takes a political turn with the opposition leader Sambhaji Yadav too deciding to wage his personal battle against the chief minister. The CM pulls all strings to save his son. He uses his political clout to silence opposition and money to grease the palms. With the corrupt CM on one side and the ACP, Iqbal and Sambhaji Yadav on the other the screen turns into a battleground, and thus begins the Kurukshetra.

Mahesh tells the story convincingly. With a veteran's ease, the man delineates the character of an ideal cop, drawing alongside the ordeal of his wife. The canvas is imbued with political hues.

Sanjay Dutt plays the ideal cop Prithvi Raj Singh. His wife Anjali (Mahima Chowdhary) and his sister Arti are his be-all and end-all.

With remarkable panache, Sanjay Dutt has switched from Vaastav's trigger-happy bhai to a highly moralistic and stern cop. Mahima doesn’t stake much footage in the film, but still packs in a commendable performance.

In Mahesh we certainly have a talented director in the making. Many a time he makes the plot a bit too serious and then punctuates the flow with raunchy numbers from the likes of ravishing Raveena and saucy Suman Ranganathan. Music director Himesh Reshammiya's score fails to make any impression.

The ideal cop's portrait that Mahesh draws in the film is a bit removed from the stereotypical.. The film is pacy, griping and full of nail-biting sequences to keep you at the edge of your seat. There is also a pinch or two of masala to get your adrenalin flowing
