'Takshak' Nihalani was better in ‘Ardh Satya’

Govind Nihalani, the director who gave us Ardh Satya and Aakrosh is back after a long gap. This time he has made a commercial film Takshak, which raises the issue of the builder-mafia. Nihalani has taken good work from Ajay Devgun, who thrives on serious roles.

Ishaan (Ajay Devgun) and Sunny (Rahul Bose) are best friends. The two are heirs to a construction business, which is less about construction and more to do with the mafia.

Their friendship begins to suffer when Suman (Tabu) enters Ishaan's life. She is an idealist and hates violence. Ishaan wants to give up violence and get married to her. But his sense of loyalty to his friend and his duty to his father puts him in a dilemma. Worse, he is forced to take part in a massacre.

Ajay Devgun is on familiar territory, brooding and gun in hand. And, he has portrayed the character very well. Tabu gets a serious role in trying to keep Devgun on the right path. But she has not got the role she should have, considering her talent.

Rahul Bose, the model-turned actor (English August and Bombay Boys), gets a Bollywood break with this film. He is good in his role.

Amrish Puri, having given up villainy, is now focusing on character roles. And he seems to be doing pretty well.

Newcomer Nethra Raghuraman, a model, does a sizzling dance number in the film.

The film has Govind Nihalani’s brilliant direction but only in patches. He seems to have got caught between the parallel and commercial cinemas.

A. R. Rahman’s music is his usual fusion stuff. Jhumbalika Jhumbalika has become popular
