In “Moksha” Ashok Mehta goes a little overboard in showing his cinematographic talent and thereby smothers a could-have-been social commentary under a barrage of technically sleek shots.

Switching on and off from black-and-white mode to color Mehta moves his camera at every conceivable angle but ignores what is believed to be the back bone of any good film – a tight script.

It

is this fact that gives the film a commercial ad look. Like “Aks” (which was also an ad filmmaker’s debut film) “Moksha” is visually gripping but lacking in content where the story is concerned.

For instance, Vikram’s character is infused with an extra dose of cynicism. As a law graduate he scoffs off every established judicial system and rather prefers to while away his time riding horses and driving Mahindra jeeps.

And when a suave lass wants to woo him he as a resolute no for an answer. But he is flattered after she buys him an expensive painting. Even Vikram’s idea to form a novel institution to impart true justice seems too naïve to accept. Certainly his character could have done with some intelligent pruning.

As a result the film ends up being Arjun Rampal’s celluloid portfolio – highlighting his debonair persona and his finely sewn features to the hilt. On the flip side Manisha seems wasted in a role that relegates her to the margins.

Even the presence of veterans like Naseeruddin Shah and Paresh Rawal fail to inject fervor into this lifeless story.
