'Hindustan Ki Kasam' Cashing in on Patriotic Fervor, but average film

Veeru Devgun’s first directorial venture Hindustan Ki Kasam, is the story of two brothers separated during partition. The film has a patriotic theme and Amitabh Bachchan teams up with Ajay Devgun once again after Major Saab.

Ajay Devgun plays a double role in this action film, of separated twins. One a patriotic Indian and the other, a Pakistani agent, brainwashed into waging war on India. Kader Khan is a psychoanalyst, probing the mind of one to gauge the thinking of his separated twin!

Ajay Malhotra (Ajay Devgun) is a popular Hindi novelist who gets entangled in a military intelligence case. The Indian Army believes the plots used by him in his novels are from military classified files.

Ajay’s plots mirror actual instances of espionage. He is accused of killing army officers whom he has mentioned in his novel. But Ajay pleads not guilty, as his plots are products of his dreams.

Amitabh’s dialogue delivery is back to its fiery best, but does not suit the old man he plays. In this film, Amitabh is Kabira, a sort of Sutradhar of plays, lending a continuity from the past to the present.

Amitabh had been impressed by the exhortations of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose during the freedom struggle and lost his arm in a border conflict. The black and white superimposed sequence showing a young Amitabh and Navin Nishchol with Bose is impressive.

But as the years passed by, Kabira has been disillusioned with the state of the country and lack of nationalism among people. The role gives Amitabh ample opportunity to stir up the audience.

There is not much to do for the actresses. Sushmita Sen is partnering the writer and Manisha Koirala is the Muslim girl friend of the enemy agent. It appears they are in the film only for singing and dancing. Both the actresses are merely props and their talents are wasted.

Veeru Devgun, who had earlier planned to release his film simultaneously in India and Pakistan, has now decided to release it only in India and stall the Pakistan release for peaceful, happier times.

The film has been shot on several locations in Mumbai. A huge set was specially erected for this purpose at Filmistan Studios, and last year the Devguns also shot the film extensively in the United States.

The movie has too many action shots with no direction. It’s too loud and lacks a good script.

Sukhwinder Singh’s music is below average. In fact, music is one of the weaknesses of Hindustan Ki Kasam
