'Baba'

A happily married couple that had been childless for years is blessed by a group of saints. The blessing comes true and a baby boy is born. The saints name the baby as Baba and predict that the little one will grow up to be strong and famous.

Time passes and Baba (Rajnikant) grows up to be a local goon (but a do-gooder) who is revered as messiah by the poor. Although an atheist at heart, Baba is the typical Good Samaritan who empathizes with the oppressed and raises voice against the tyrant politicians.

Baba’s

gorgeous neighbor Chamundeswari (Manisha Koirala) admires him secretly for his machismo and bravado.

One day, Baba meets a wise Guru and follows him to heavens. The guru, in return, grants Baba with seven wishes. When Baba returns to his old life he wastes his four wishes carelessly in trivialities like bringing down a kite or wishing for 10 lakh rupees. But he decides to use his remaining three wishes for good cause.

The power hungry Chief Minister comes to know of Baba’s boon and blackmails him to wish for his government to remain in power for next thirty years. Baba refuses. In return there follows a series of attack on Baba’s mother (Sujatha) and his loved ones.

Rest of the film revolves around how Baba uses his supernatural powers to bring down the corrupt chief minister, and becomes the people’s leader himself.

In spite of the hype surrounding ‘Baba’, the film is an average fare with hackneyed story and Suresh Krissna’s unimaginative direction. The film flaunts Rajnikant’s superhero image and gives too little footage to Nepalese beauty Manisha Koirala.
