Manisha Koirala’s maiden directorial attempt Paisa Vasool is a lame attempt at humor that may make you chuckle at times, but the yawns it brings outnumber that.

Although the storyline of the film is quite interesting, the movie simply falls flat because of poorly written script and sloppily conceptualized screenplay. Even the performances by Manisha and Sushmita Sen are not able to lift the movie.

The

film is about two women – Baby (Sush) and Maria (Manisha).

Baby is a Delhiite who goes to Mumbai to try her luck in films. But her long height makes it impossible for film producers to find a suitably tall hero for her. So the chatterbox Baby is relegated to doing only item numbers and music videos.

On the other hand, Maria is a bit shy and introvert woman who runs away from her cruel cop-husband in a small town to settle down in Mumbai. She earns her living by running a bakery in Bandra. Although she has also inherited an ancestral bungalow, but the real estate mafia and the area goons always keep harassing her.

Baby and Maria meet by chance outside a pub and instantly strike a kindred chord. Soon they become best of friends and start sharing their lives including their room. They are tired of the mundane rut and want to take a short route from rags to riches.

One day the two come across a robbery. Desperate to make an easy buck, the two blackmail the robbers to share the loot with them. But the scheme backfires and the two are on the run saving their skins from the bad guys. What follows is an interesting cat-n-mouse game in which sometimes cat is after the mouse and sometimes mouse after the cat.

Paisa Vasool looks like a rehash of Hollywood flick ‘High Heels and Low Lives’. Although it has been infused with the ingredients palatable to Indian audience, the movie turns out to be boring fare because of poor direction by Srinivas Bhashyam. His cinematic sensibilities are too bland to involve a viewer.

At times the humor in the film is too predictable and there are other sequences that are simply puerile. Even the two leading characters Baby and Maria are made to overreact in many situations.

The movie’s narrative too progresses with regular jerks and by the time the climax comes, you have been through enough ‘speed breakers’ to keep the track of story’s thread.
