'Meenaxi'

Painter-cum-filmmaker M.F. Hussain’s 'Meenaxi - Tale of 3 Cities' is set in three cities of Hyderabad, Jaisalmer and Prague. The film’s protagonist (Tabu) adopts three different personalities as Meenaxi, Meenakshi and Maria in the three respective cities.

Nawab (Raghvir Yadav) is a famous novelist from Hyderabad. Having written a number of stories, the writer has been feeling sapped of any inspiration to write a substantial story for last five years. He is suffering from the classic case of a writer's block.

One day Nawab comes across an enigmatic and individualistic woman named Meenaxi (Tabu) at a traditional qawwali ceremony. The writer is immediately drawn towards

her as the inspiration for his story but Meenaxi is not quite willing to perform the part of a passive muse.

There are many complexities to Meenaxi’s character. She assumes different personae in different cities. She can be the mysterious perfume trader of Hyderabad, the exotic desert bloom of Jaisalmer and the orphaned Maria of Prague.

Meenaxi concretizes her command over Nawab. She even dismisses the novelist’s renewed attempts at writing as clichéd and insubstantial. She is scathingly critical about his story and is amused by one of the characters he creates, the lovelorn and awkward Kaameshwar.

All this criticism from Meenaxi takes the writer into a state of deeper despair. She rubbishes his attempts at writing as futile. But the writer must survive and live, if he can, without her support, inspiration and criticism.

The film, collaboration between Hussain and his painter son Owais Husain, leaves itself open to interpretations and readings by every viewer.
